Important Places

Cappadocia

Nevşehir · UNESCO World Heritage

Formed millions of years ago by volcanic eruptions and shaped by erosion, the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia make it a one-of-a-kind geography in the world. We had a magical experience with the underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı, the Göreme Open Air Museum and hot air balloons adorning the sky at sunrise.

Mevlana Museum

Konya · Spiritual Centre

This museum, housing the tomb of the great Sufi mystic Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi who lived in Konya in the 13th century, is one of the most visited museums in the world with millions of visitors each year. Its iconic green dome, manuscripts and profound spiritual atmosphere offer visitors a deeply peaceful experience.

Anıtkabir

Ankara · National Monument

Anıtkabir, the final resting place of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Republic of Turkey, was built between 1944 and 1953. With its guard-changing ceremony, the 128-metre Lion's Road and its museum, it fills every visitor with deep respect and pride.

Salt Lake (Tuz Gölü)

Aksaray · Natural Wonder

Turkey's second largest lake, Tuz Gölü, presents a sea of white stretching as far as the eye can see especially in summer when the water recedes and a layer of pure salt is revealed. The pink tableaux formed by flamingos add a separate beauty to this lake, which supplies a large portion of Turkey's salt needs.

Daily Journey Notes

DAY 1 Ankara

We began our Central Anatolia journey from the capital Ankara. First we visited Anıtkabir and bowed in respect before Atatürk. We then climbed the walls of Ankara Castle and watched the city's panoramic view. In the afternoon at the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations we examined rare artefacts from the Hittite, Phrygian and Urartu periods.

DAY 2 Salt Lake

We walked on the magnificent whiteness of Salt Lake (Tuz Gölü), Turkey's second largest lake. We took off our shoes on the salt and felt that unique texture. The reflections created by sunlight among the salt crystals on the flat plain offered incredible photographs.
